Fun facts about Jingle Bell Rock:

  • Jingle Bell Rock was originally recorded by Bobby Helms and released just a few days before Christmas in 1957. It was a big hit, and for four of the next five years it repeated as a top hit and became a Christmas classic still played each holiday season.
  • Dozens of artists have recorded it, including the Jonas Brothers, Hilary Duff, Billy Idol, Brenda Lee, Bill Haley and the Comets, and even Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem of the Muppet Show.
  • You don’t want to miss hearing the Barton Hills Choir perform Jingle Bell Rock at the Zilker Tree Lighting on December 5.

  • Written by Felix Bernard (composer)  and Dick Smith (lyricist) in 1934, Winter Wonderland  is generally regarded as a Christmas song, but the holiday is never mentioned in the lyrics.
  • Dozens of artists have recorded Winter Wonderland, including Guy Lombardo and his Orchestra, Bob Dylan, Perry Como, Radiohead, and Selena Gomez.
  • The best performance of Winter Wonderland will be this holiday season by the Barton Hills Choir

Zilker Tree

Mark your calendars for a very special event that will be here before you know it: the lighting of the Zilker Tree. An annual tradition since 1965, the event promises to be even more popular since the City of Austin budget for 2010-2011 did not provide funding for the famous Trail of Lights.

The show is scheduled to start at 6 PM but come early to get a seat up close to see the Barton Hills Choir perform holiday favorites, including:

Parking is free, but bring funds for hot chocolate, kettle corn, and other goodies that will be available.  It’s a wonderful way to get into the holiday spirit and is sure to be a night to remember.

The Barton Hills Elementary Choir performed their Sock Hop Show in front of a large and appreciative crowd on Thursday night, Sept. 30, in the school cafeteria. Videographer Lynn Williamson captured the show and you can watch it now by clicking on the picture above.
