The Barton Hills Choir 2nd Grade Choir Camp ran from 6/9 to 6/13. The kids worked on their sight-reading and ear training and prepared for their big show at Book People on 6/14. Songs were selected from the 2nd grade repertoire. Enjoy these four videos produced by Gavin Tabone. Book People footage shot by Scott Bradley.

The Barton Hills Choir Camp members performed for a large and appreciative audience in the school cafeteria on the evening of June 13. Comprised of 2nd-6th graders, the choir was accompanied by Director Gavin Tabone on piano, Jason Brint on bass, Don Cento on guitar, and Jake Perlman on drums.

The kids sang tunes by Muse, Wilco, and The Flaming Lips as well as other choir classics. Enjoy these pictures taken by Amy Geltemeyer (click the thumbnail to view a larger version).

Enjoy this video of The Barton Hills Choir performing the 1962 Sam Cooke classic Twisting the Night Away at the choir summer camp 2012 performance. The choir is made up of 2nd through 6th graders from Barton Hills Elementary School in Austin, TX and is accompanied by Gavin Tabone on keys, Jake Perlman on drums, and Aaron Dembe on bass.

Fun facts:

  • Inspiration for the song came when Cooke saw video of the Peppermint Lounge in New York on the Today Show
  • Sam Cooke was the first modern black artist to form their own record label and publishing company
